Security is important because we never know what other people’s true intentions are and to make sure our belongings will be safer when not being monitored, you may want to add a lock into it, such as with Master Lock 175D Vs 178D that we can open with combination keys. These locks are very useful but also user friendly and safe. Before deciding to choose one, go check what they can offer the most and which seems to fit you better below.

Choosing Padlock
Keeping your belongings safe is a challenge because we never know what will happen in the future, out there, and we are not always present in the same spot to make sure there is no one who will take or modify our items. Locking your luggage, door, and fence are a bare minimum protection we can provide and they are not always effective. But, at least if there is an attempt, they won’t get the item as easily as when unlocked.
Even in a fairly safe neighborhood, one said we can never be too safe which is why security companies are out there offering personal securing products such as locks to the general population. One of the most common security tools we often carry or use is padlock and yes, this may sound simple but in fact a very useful item to have around as needed. They are versatile, can be used on almost anything from doors to your motorbike but also convenient to open with low to medium safety.
In a glance they are similar, all padlocks are using the same system and overall will work the same but it doesn’t mean you can just grab any model and use it for every part of the house that needs individual lock. Here are some basic factors you may want to consider when shopping or choosing a new padlock:
- Size matters the most when it is about padlock and the bigger it is, the better the performance. Not only are they heavy but when someone plans to cut it, they will need a longer time to be able to go through the thick material. However, it doesn’t mean we have to buy the biggest lock in the store because it needs to slip easily between chains or loops where the lock is intended to be used.
- Shackle Material is another important part to choose when deciding to find a better padlock. They are typically in U shape and it can be wider or longer depending on the model; what’s confusing is not all companies will list their material option especially for cheap lock but if available, alloy steel or carbide are a great choice for their durability.
- Key size is probably the least important in most people’s opinion and in general we will think they follow the padlock size. It is true in many cases but we are talking about the pin on the key because the more pins or the bigger it is, the more difficult it is to pick.

About Master Lock 175D and 178D
Now when you already have an idea on how to choose the best lock, it is the time to see what the market has to offer because you will find almost unlimited amounts of choices both those from brands we are familiar with to those we have no idea exist. Another part to prepare when looking for padlock is the budget itself. Padlock can be $5-$20 cheap or even $1500 expensive so it is faster to shop based on how many we can spend.
If the purpose is a lock fence or your storage room and garage which is inside the property, something at around $10 will be a very ideal choice; they are not too cheap but will still be affordable to purchase several at once. When talking about padlock, one of the first brands that comes to our mind is Master Lock and this is a good company to choose your product from. They have been around for quite some time making reliable padlocks but also cost friendly for the general mass.
They do offer various different locks depending on your preference; they can have a traditional key, gun lock, chain lock, shrouded padlock, deadbolt, combination key lock, and even digital lock. For those who don’t want the hassle to carry the padlock keys around or worry about losing them, Master Lock 175D and 178D will be a very ideal choice to consider. Both of them are locked using combination keys and will be very convenient to have especially if you will be using more than one lock.
Combination padlock is not a new thing anymore and they are also not as fancy so most are very affordable. These two are very similar for what they can offer from the unit and they are priced at the same point as well which makes it a bit confusing to choose. However, in general you will be satisfied with either of them because the difference won’t affect the performance much. They are not very high in security level but still reliable for light protection.
Master Lock 175D and 178D Design
Side by side you will not mistook Master Lock 175D and 178D as the same model because they are very different and as you can see, the 178D is black and the 175D is in yellow-brass color. This is what sets them apart from each other and as the color suggests, the black one is made from die cast material while the other is brass. Quality wise they are on the same level and compared to other higher material, these are not very special but just decent.
The padlock size is around 3 inch tall and 2 inch wide, so they should be able to fit on most lockers or chains. The bottom part is where you will find the combination key located and they are not as user friendly when you are in a hurry compared to those located along the body of the padlock. Besides the fashion and main body material, we do think they are exactly the same. Read also: Arlo Pro 2 vs Nest.
Master Lock 175D and 178D Details
Moving further, let’s check these key a little bit more detailed and beside the aforementioned die cast or brass body, another important part to notice here is their shackle because if you look closer, there is “hardened” written on the shackle means these two are not using alloy or carbide. It is not necessarily a bad thing but it doesn’t mean the key will be great as well; just okay if you ask most people. This material is made usually by diffusing carbon and/or nitrogen into the outer layer of the steel at high temperature.
The next part we want to mention is the key itself and this is where everything is simpler because they use combination keys instead of regular keys. There will be a small key included in the package and this is used to reset the code in case you forget the preset one. There will be a small slot on the side of the body to insert this small key when resetting.
Master Lock 175D and 178D Resetting
Setting the combination key is also simple and you will only need a few seconds to do it. The key will come in 0-0-0-0 or a different set of arrays but the preset first code is always the same 0-0-0-0 so insert the combination and depress it then pull it open. The combination key can only be set when the lock is open and to start resetting, put the resetting key in the lock then turn it at 90 degree in either direction.
The key will remain at this position when you enter the desired combination key and when done, turn the resetting key again and we are finished. Using the key is also simple by entering the combination key and then the lock will automatically open when you depress the shackle. Note to always scramble the dials when you are done locking to be more secured.
Master Lock 175D and 178D Performance
Performance wise, Master Lock 175D and 178D are very reliable but only for light security application or something that we don’t have to pay attention to such as a gym locker room where people are always coming and going or to secure your fence. They are pretty easy to cut using a powered metal cutting blade but as long as there are no valuable items or something that needs extra protection, we do think these are useful for various applications as well as durable enough for prolonged use, especially indoor.
Master Lock 175D vs 178D
Choosing a padlock can be confusing for there are so many of them but among those, Master Lock 175D and 178D will be a very ideal choice for any light security purposes. Their difference is only on the body material as the latter is die cast and the former is brass but performance and mechanism wise they are pretty much the same to each other. We do think they are great for indoor application or places with frequent people moving around.

Conclusion
You can pick any of these locks and still be satisfied with their performance because they are almost exactly the same but, we do like the Master Lock 178D better as the material seems to be more resistant against rust.
